TIMSS 2015

TIMSS is an international comparative school assessment of mathematics and science skills of students at different grade levels. In TIMSS 2015, fourth graders from Germany participated for the third time.

Project description

The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is an international comparative school assessment conducted by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA). The study is an evaluation of students’ mathematics and science achievement at different grade levels, and takes into account the basic conditions of the school learning environment. With all 16 states participating, the random sample includes approximately 4,000 fourth grade children from 210 primary and special schools. 

The assessment tests used in TIMSS include tasks requiring a range of cognitive skills (e.g. problem solving) from different content domains (e.g. arithmetic or biology). Students are given 40 minutes for each science and mathematics, answering both multiple choice and free-response questions. In addition to assessment tests, questionnaires are given to participating children, parents, teachers of mathematics and science, and school administrators. These are used to collect relevant information about school and family backgrounds in order to interpret performance in accordance with the diverse set of social and school environmental factors. 

A key objective of the study is to document long-term trends in the participating education systems. Germany's participation takes place as part the overall strategy for educational monitoring in Germany as agreed upon by the KMK and BMBF.
